There has been a number of changes to the flower displays around Sheringham for 2011. It is important make changes from time to time as this keeps the whole area looking fresh and maintained.

Roundabout  Following the completion of the extended roundabout on Cromer Road, Sheringham in Bloom have planted this to create a really attractive entrance to the town. The plan was to use plants that need the minimum of watering and are pretty tough for such a difficult site.  However this does not mean the planting will be boring.  We have used a lot of grasses and structural plants and have under planted with flowering shrubs. It will of course take at least a year to reach its full potential, and we may have to make some small adjustments as we find out what works and what doesn’t.

Island Planters For many years we have had a number of planters on the island alongside the roundabout.  Following the alteration to and planting up of this new roundabout, it was felt that to have too many planters around would detract from the impact of the new planting.  Some of the older and smaller planters have therefore been removed and the larger ones have been re-sited to flank the crossing outside the Masonic Hall.

Barrier Baskets We have taken possession of 8 barrier baskets, which have kindly been donated to us by Cromer in Bloom who no longer have a need for them.  We have decided to place four of these on the barriers alongside the Cromer Road traffic lights.  On two of the corners of this area the town is well supported with very good flower displays from the Tyneside Club on Station Road and the Social Club on Holway Road, and we felt that by placing these baskets in this position it would nicely balance out that area.

The remaining four baskets will be placed outside the café on the seafront by the Tank. These should brighten up an extensive area of concrete and the owner has promised to keep them watered and maintained for us.

The Health Centre Two years ago we built the Physic/Sensory garden in the grounds of the Health Centre and this has been a huge success and is well used by both patients and staff alike.  We have now been asked to create a small garden right at the front, which was becoming disfigured due to cars parking on the grass, instead of in the car park.  This has now been completed and will hopefully keep that area looking good.

Entrance Bed, Holway Road This bed has been proving a problem for the last couple of years.  It has always been planted with vibrant bedding to make an impact on visitors coming into the town.  However last year the beds were vandalized a number of times, which meant the plants did not grow to their maximum size and the effect was watered down.  Also Anglia water had problems in that area and we discovered that we were planting over an access point.  It is not possible to move the bed substantially so a decision has been take to change over to more permanent planting that will resist vandals and leave the access area available to Anglia Water. Plans are still being developed but it will be important to ensure that we use plants that need the minimum of water.

North Norfolk District Council maintains the gardens on the Lees, the War Memorial, the Putting Green and the small bed outside the Tourist Information Centre.  The Council has now pledged to refurbish these areas over a period and will gradually introduce more permanent planting.  This will reduce maintenance costs and also the cost of expensive bedding plants that needs to be replaced twice a year.
