The Sheringham Arboretum is situated on the Cromer Road overlooking the North Norfolk Railway station and the town’s main car park. The area was originally spoil from when the car park was created, but has long since been grassed over and planted up with daffodils. A number of trees had self-sown there but were becoming old resulting in some having to be removed due to disease. This is a deceptively large area of land and last year a member of Sheringham in Bloom came up with a plan to make an arboretum of garden trees, and to create a small park for the use of residents and visitors alike. North Norfolk District Council agreed to our suggestion and the initial trees were planted to celebrate the first day of spring 2009, with a further selection being planted this year at the same time.
The intention is that this will be a long-term project and will take at least 5 years to complete. The collection will consist of garden trees only as these will be more in scale to the size of the site. A list of suitable trees has been drawn up to give a broad range of species and will result in an attractive area with interest all year round. All the trees are available to be sponsored and will only be planted as sponsorship is received. The sponsor can select the tree of choice from our list and will be encouraged to attend and help with the planting of the tree. It is also hoped that this unique concept will offer a reference point for anyone planning to plant trees in their own garden.
