In February 1982 the Sheringham Town Council received a letter from Norfolk County Council inviting them to enter a competition for the “Best Kept Village or Town”.  They agreed to enter and a working party was formed in February 1982.  At the July 1982 Council Meeting it was reported that Sheringham had won the Civic Amenity Award in the Small Market Town and Seaside Communities class.  This was quite an achievement as it was the first time the town had entered. The town was awarded a decorative plaque, which was erected on Otterndorf Green. The group continued headed by Judy Nichols, a town councillor, but in 1997 when she died the Women’s Institute took over.

In 1998 it became a community group, formed to organise entry into Anglia in Bloom and the Best Kept Village competitions.  The Chairman was Brian Hannah, and it is in this form that the group continues today.

The aims of Sheringham in Bloom are:

•   To ensure that the town of Sheringham presents an attractive and clean environment to both residents and visitors.

•   To promote and manage floral displays and related projects in order to enhance the town environment.

•   To seek and retain suitable sponsorship to fund these activities.

•   To encourage the involvement of local organisations, educational institutions and residents in the activities of the association.

•   To promote, organise and manage Sheringham’s entry in the annual Anglia in Bloom competition, and also other competitions as appropriate.
